Bio Engineering on Hunter Valley Bridge 1 - Completed June 2008

Thank you to all 35 participants in the bio engineering course. The two day course was sponsored by The Bow Region Stewardship Society, The Ghost Stewardship Monitoring Group and Alberta Sustainable Resources Development.

Day one was spent in class with instructor Dave Polster reviewing reading material. Students participated in brain storming activities and slide show presentations showing the success of bio engineering efforts in BC.

Dave Polster of Polster Environmental Services is a plant ecologist with over 30 years of experience in vegetation studies, reclamation and invasive species management.  He graduated from the University of Victoria with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and a Master of Science degree in 1977.  He has developed a wide variety of reclamation techniques for steep/unstable slopes as well as techniques for the re-establishment of riparian and aquatic habitats.  He is the past-president of the Canadian Land Reclamation Association.  Currently he is the treasurer for the B.C. Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration and serves as the alternate mining representative on the board of the Invasive Plant Council of B.C.

Day two was spent in perfect weather reclaiming the stream bank in Fallen Timber, Waiparous. Participants gathered cut and willow and reconstructed the stream bank by hand. Willow fences were constructed and the fresh cut willow was then planted on the stream bank steps and in between willow fence.

A second course was held in the summer and a second bioengineering project was completed by the students at U of C. Recent pictures show just how successful this approach can be.
