Bow Valley - Sept 9 2008

A crew of 14 volunteers, a crew leader, and 3 Provincial staff tackled a newly cut section of the horseshoe loop near the Alpine Club of Canada. The crew started at 0900 and hiked up Cougar Creek to the trail connecting Benchlands to the Alpine Club. This area was newly machine cut and the volunteers began refining the trail cut by Jeff Eamon and his provincial crew. The purpose of the trail was to replace a steep climb with a traversing climb that would be more sustainable. While the main trail lead was cut with machinery, the edges above and below the tread, the corners, and switch-backs all had to be done by hand. Congratulations to the volunteers from Shell Canada and crew leader Nick Dotchin for your hard work to complete 1.5km of new trail! They had great success, managing to reach the old trail with the new section by 1530. This was a great example of trail planning as the new section should be more sustainable for future use and much more pleasant to use. The combination of the machine cut trail and the excellent hand labour produced a fairly finished looking section of trail that many can enjoy. The volunteers worked hard, even in the heat and should be commended for their efforts at this heavy-labour task.
